If you got bitten or scratched by a dog in Virginia, it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of capnocytophaga infection. This infection can lead to serious illness, and in some cases, death.

What is capnocytophaga?

Capnocytophaga is a bacteria that’s found in the mouths of dogs and cats. It can also be found in other animals, such as rats and mice. When these animals bite or scratch humans, the bacteria can enter the human body through the wound. Unfortunately, capnocytophaga infection is often not diagnosed until it’s too late.

What are the signs and symptoms of capnocytophaga infection?

One of the most common signs of capnocytophaga infection is fever. Other symptoms include chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and joint pain. In some cases, the infection can lead to sepsis, which is a life-threatening condition.

The infection usually occurs within 3-5 days after the dog bite or scratch. However, in some cases, it can take up to 2 weeks for the symptoms to appear.

How is the infection treated?

One of the most important things you can do if you think you have a capnocytophaga infection is to see a doctor immediately. If the infection is caught early, it can get treated with antibiotics, such as penicillin or amoxicillin. However, if the infection is more severe, you may need to be hospitalized and treated with intravenous antibiotics.

While a capnocytophaga infection can be serious, it’s important to remember that there are a few things you can do to prevent it. First, if you have a dog, make sure it is up to date on its vaccinations. Second, if you get bitten or scratched by a dog, wash the wound immediately with soap and water. Finally, see a doctor as soon as possible if you think you may have a capnocytophaga infection.
